FAQs
Will my shy child become aggressive? Will this help my aggressive child?

We understand that children have their own personalities and predispositions.

We encourage good behavior and good decision making in various ways while instructing. For many of our students, what we say has added "weight," simply because we are martial arts "Blackbelts.

We are not the "magic potion" that will cure children of "all that ails them." However, when we are able to work with parents synergistically, we can accomplish some pretty cool things. Children, who are shy and quiet, all the time, learn that there are times to stand-up and speak-up. Those who like to "bounce off the walls," all the time, learn that there are times that they must be still and they must be quiet. (These are the same things that you teach them...but we do it while wearing 'cool' martial arts uniforms.) We like to say that "martial arts-done-right has a 'middling' effect on behavior."

I am an adult; am I too old for classes?

We have taught students as young as 3 to as old as 70 years of age.

Until the release of the "Karate Kid" movie, most practitioners of martial arts, in the United States, were adults. Now, many adults think that it is a children’s activity. That couldn’t be further from the truth. It’s an activity for anyone who wants to be active, have some disciplined-fun and learn some practical self-defense skills.

Our system of karate is eclectic and based on individual abilities. We don’t expect the 3 year old to perform like the 12 year old or the 70 year old to perform like the 17 year old. Whereas a jump spinning kick to the head might look really cool, it’s way more practical in a real-life self-defense situation to use a simple side kick to the knee. When done appropriately, all ages will benefit from training.

Do adults have to train with young children? How are the classes divided?

We have created different environments for different individual mindsets.

Many of our children’s classes are divided by age and belt rank (3-4, 4-6, 7-12 years of age; beginner, intermediate & advanced ranks.) We have Family Classes in which children ages 7 & above and adults of all ranks may train together. Finally, we have Teen and Adult Classes, in which there are no little children under foot.

Is the training dangerous?

Bearing in mind that a person can step off a curb and twist an ankle, we do everything we can to insure our students a safe, worry-free environment. We also encourage students to communicate with us any and all questions and concerns.

Q. What will I/my child learn?

A. Depending on the program, we offer:

BASICS: Stances, blocks, strikes, kicks

FORMS: Patterns of movement combining the basics

WEAPONS: (martial): Basics and forms

SPARRING: Using techniques to defend and score on target areas, with safety in mind

SELF-DEFENSE: Practical, situational

LIFE SKILLS: Positive mental attitudes, character development

LEADERSHIP TRAINING: Science of teaching, personal development, people skills
